Hi, I delivered my daughter at Southwestern Hospital almost 3 years ago. I loved their ER cause you get in quickly and they treat you like a person (not usually so at Comanche). But after staying there for two separate occasions (C-sec and a weeklong stay later). I'm not sure if I want to deliver there again or not. I am due for a second C-sec the week between Christmas and New Years, so I have to decide soon where to delive.

I have heard good and bad about Comanche. I hear the Nurses & etc in the OB dept and Labor & Delivery treat the doctors horrible. And that it's really packed there. But that they are well staffed and the food is good.
The food at Southwestern was Ok, but the cafeteria was hardly open and that was frusterating. Since I have a choice, I want to make a good one. Has anybody been to both? Or perhaps works at Southwestern and can tell me if they are still understaffed? It was pretty frusterating the first time.

Thanks for any advice.

I had my daughter at Comanche in February of this year and was really pretty happy with it. I was induced and the nurses on the night shift gave me the worst IV I've ever had, but other than that I was pretty stinkin pleased. I was excited about using the tub but with an induction that didn't even have a chance of happening but I think it's more dependent on your doctor and if they want internal monitoring. The nurses were all sweet, even the 2 who couldn't give an IV (they were younger, an older nurse finally came in and got it right away). And when my husband forgot everything we learned in childbirth classes and the nurse saw me starting to freak out and forgetting to breath and stepped right in and got me back on track. I ended up having a c-section and everyone in the OR was fantastic and let me hold her all the way back to my room where a nurse helped me get my daughter nursing right away. I spent atleast an hour with my daughter before they wanted to take her to the nursery, my husband went with her and I was taken to post-partum. I was impressed with the nursery nurses. They all were very respectful of the things I wanted for my daughter. She only went to the nursery for the doctor and to be weighed but they were always very quick to bring her back and very informative of what they were doing and her stats. They were very gentle with her, just like I would be. Then my daughter was jaundiced. The nurse took time to explain everything and when they gave ME the choice to give my breastfed baby formula to help push the bilirubin out they taught us how to feed her from a cup so we didn't have to use a bottle. I never felt like I was just participating in her care and the doctors and nurses were guiding it. I was in control. Same goes for myself as well.

I do remember there being several patients in both L&D and PP but nobody had to share a room when I was there and I was even allowed to stay in my private room an extra night for my daughter's jaundice treatment. I never felt like I waited long for my nurse. Actually I think I only had to wait on her once when I buzzed and it was no more than a few minutes. Every other time a nurse was in my room within seconds of me buzzing. I never saw the nurses in L&D treat the doctors that came in to my room with anything but respect. And I did like the food they brought me, I'm kinda picky and even though I didn't know I could 'order' what I wanted until the day before I left, I liked it.

We moved here half way through my pregnancy I was not happy about having my baby in a place I didn't know, with a doctor I didn't know and in a hospital I didn't know anything about but I'm actually glad I had her at Comanche. I don't think my experience would have been as good back home.

COMANCHE
I have delivered at both with in the last 5 yrs promise that comanche was the best out of the two at swmc i had to walk to my recovery room carring my bags literly less then an hour after delivering then they placed me in a room w a lady who had just had a hystorictomy (sp) i could get any help from the nurses and had absolutley no help w breast feeding i was out of the hospital in less then 24hrs, the only nice thing about this hospital was the labor and delivery nurse i had NUrse Jackie and she is gone now

Comanche was great the nurse r awesome

Thanks, I think I will give Comanche a shot. Laura- seems like you had some of the same problems at SWMC that I did, so it wasn't just me. Good to know.
Glenna- that's awesome that they were so helpful. I remember thinking with my daughter that it was good that I had been there through my sister's and friends kids, otherwise I would have been completely lost. It's good to know that they are so helpful at Comanche. And the fact that you got to hold your daughter right away and keep her with you for the first hour is awesome! I had a hard time, cause I barely saw my daughter for a second and then the next time I saw her was after I was all stitched up and in recovery. Kinda made it hard to feel like she was really my daughter. My daughter also had jaundice and it frusterated me that I had to inform the nurse that she looked way too yellow, and they kinda blew it off at first. Turned out she was pretty bad and had to be in the nursery with the "tanning bed" for the last 2 days, even though they said that they could move it into my room, they never did.
I'm definately going to try Comanche. Thanks a bunch.

I had my son October 2009 and I had the absolute worst nurse. maybe she was a trainee? Im not sure but I am petrified of needles and I have 'rolling veins'. She stuck in my right hand and went through the vein. My hand welted up because the blood was leaving the vein and trying to clot I guess. I don't know. I'm not a doctor. Anyhow it was swolen for a week and stayed bruised up until less than a week before my 6 week check up. She then moved to my other hand and poked in and the weign disapeared, and that hand welted up and remained bruised for about a week. And then they had to stick the IV in a vein in my arm between my wrist and elbow, on top of my arm. The food was ok. Nurses were good. My doctor was great. on call ped did babys circumcision which went well and healed good and fast.
My bad experience was at the Comanche memorial hosp. I would go again though but ask a trained nurse to do my IV. Best of luck!

Thanks Brit. I have awesome veins, but the nurse that stuck me chose to try the worst ones possible in my wrist and I also had problems with a huge bump and bruise forever. I will definately ask for the IV team person when I go. Thanks for the advice.

I had my daughter feb of this year at CCMH. I had an amazing experience. The food was really good and the staff were great. My nurse was really kind and did not leave my room throughout my entire labor or delivery and was there until i was moved to the PP room. The dr that delivered my daughter was really kind and understanding with all of my concerns, they answered all my questions, and were so helpful with us being first time parents and all. They explained everything so well and were very patient. I havent tried southwestern, but a friend of mine had a horrible delivery experience there.
I highly recommend CCMH.
